House for rentIf you are planning an extended holiday or are looking to relocate, perhaps to set up a business or retire in Krabi, Thailand, you will want to find decent, long term rental accommodation. Unless money is no object the luxury hotel resorts and villas in Krabi will be too expensive for such a prolonged stay.

The housing market in Krabi is not as advanced as in some Western countries so you will need to devote some quality time to your search. Rather than relying on the internet, we recommend that you book some short term accommodation and begin your search on the ground. The roads are not as busy as in the large towns and cities so you can rent your own car or motorbike and have a good scout around. Local agents can be helpful but they tend to offer a selection of only the more expensive properties. The majority of properties are rented via the grapevine or advertised with handwritten signs, so enquire in bars and restaurants and ask the local expat community for property news.

Most houses in Krabi are Thai style that, when compared to western homes, can seem unsophisticated. Kitchen facilities tend to be basic and bathrooms usually come with a shower rather than a bath tub. Most homes have only cold running water and air conditioning is rarely standard. On the plus side a Thai house is designed for the tropical weather and will keep you cool when the heat is on !

Western style homes are becoming much more popular in Krabi due to the influx of expats, however, they cost significantly more to rent. They tend to be bigger than Thai houses, with modern kitchens and bathrooms and are often located on estates that provide facilities such as swimming pools and security. Rent will also vary according to location with Krabi Town for example, being much cheaper than some of the beach resorts.

A Guide on Where to Rent in Krabi

Finding a house to rent on the beach is almost mission impossible in Krabi unless you have the necessary funds to pay for a bungalow in one of the luxury resorts such as the ‘Krabi Tipa Resort’ or the ‘White Sand Krabi Resort’
on Ao Nang beach. If you plan to be in Krabi for a while you may actually prefer to be away from the beaches and noisy tourist areas - Krabi locals tend to avoid these areas altogether when considering a new home.
Ao Nang Resort

If you do decide to rent a house or villa in the popular tourist spot of Ao Nang, then you must be prepared for the influx of tourists in high season. Holiday makers flock here for the famous beaches and the numerous bars, restaurants, shops, banks and other facilities. Most properties here have phone and internet connectivity too, so if you want access to all the mod cons, Ao Nang could be the place for you ! English is widely spoken in Ao Nang so if you don’t want to grapple with the Thai language you can still get by perfectly well.

If you fancy the convenience of Ao Nang’s many amenities but without the crowds, you could consider renting in one of the smaller villages nearby such as Ban Chong Phli, Klong Haeng and Ao Nam Mao. Properties just a few kilometers outside Ao Nang will generally be cheaper too.
